On-the-spot blood test for brain damage


Paramedics called to attend someone who has a head injury or who may have had a stroke could carry out an on-the-spot blood test for brain damage, allowing them to quickly identify the best treatment for the patient. The only way to diagnose a stroke at present is to do a brain scan within a few hours. But time and cost constraints mean this is not always possible. So Nicholas Dale and his team at the University of Warwick, UK, have developed tiny biosensors to detect chemicals in the blood that appear when there has been trauma to the brain,
